I recently had the pleasure to meet and speak with Dr. Dwan Armstrong, Sr. Supplier Diversity Manager for The Clorox Company. She is the chairperson of the Georgia Women’s Business Council (GWBC) and serves on the board of directors for the Georgia Minority Supplier Development Council (GMSDC) as chairperson of the Certification Committee. Dwan was kind enough to take the time to share her thoughts and offer some advice to other Supplier Diversity professionals.
What are some of your objectives as Sr. Supplier Diversity Manager?
My objective at Clorox is to actively participate in the economic development of diverse business communities and add value to their supplier diversity programs, focus on connecting with retail customers and consumers, and work with diversity-owned businesses as suppliers to attract and retain the very best talent. As a dedicated resource, I am responsible for developing and implementing diversity strategies and initiatives, as well as working with the cross-functional Diversity and Inclusion Leadership Team.
What advice would you give to MBE’s who are looking to engage in business with The Clorox Company?
My advice to MBE’s would be to use the proper approach sequence. Ensure that you leverage the power of professional alliances by establishing relationships with industry experts and by doing so, using professional services to win!
What key advice do you have for corporate diversity professionals looking to expand their diversity initiatives within their company?
I would recommend that individuals responsible for implementing Supplier Diversity Programs with his/her company should research and participate in the following:
- Volunteer – Dedicate time with your home Supplier Development Council and actively participate and volunteer as a board member with your local committee.
- Self-Awareness – Be aware of your companies’ contracts including policies and procedures and most importantly what services you provide.
- Analyst- You will need to be an analyst in your role. Know the value of your position including cost savings strategies and improvements.
What is the most satisfying part about your job in Diversity Affairs?
The most satisfying part about my job is impacting my community in a positive way. I get to help create success stories and I get to meet some of the most fascinating and creative people in the world.
